Brent disbelieved the dangers of the fog and left the store with a small group to seek help from outside. His group is attacked by an unseen force and presumed dead.

  • In the ensuing panic, two people are killed, while another is fatally burned while trying to burn the insects. Meanwhile, Carmody narrowly escapes a bug attack, which convinces her to preach more fervently and gain a following among the survivors.

  • A small group led by David goes to the nearby pharmacy in search of medical supplies, but is attacked by giant spiders that kill two men, forcing them to retreat. Carmody, who opposed the campaign, exploited this failure to increase her influence by offering protection from divine wrath to the new mutants.

  • The next day, after two soldiers from the local military base committed suicide, a third soldier, Jessup, revealed that a government project to explore other dimensions was underway at the base and that scientists had accidentally opened an entrance to the creatures' habitat. Angry and vengeful, Carmody's followers sacrificed Jessup and expelled him from the store.

  • As the group makes their way through the parking lot, Ollie is devoured by a mantis-like creature, while two others, Myron and Ambrose, are killed by spider creatures from the pharmacy. Bud runs back into the store and is let in by the customers. David, Billy, Dan, Amanda, and Erin reach David's car and leave.

  • David drives through the fog, finding his house destroyed and Stephanie dead. Devastated, he drives away from town, passing a massive, six-legged monster and eventually running out of gas.
